🔊 The conversation was not renewed till they were in the lane. Some gradual widening of the clouded sky, and the paling of its deep saffron tint, showed that the moon was rising. Its rays now lighted up the scene feebly. Clare kept his arm round her waist in a mechanical way, and Tess walked as in a dream. Presently they stopped.

🔊 "I don't know how to go on," she said. "I cannot bear to tell you. I have been loving you all the while-and it breaks my heart that I must tell you-because you have been so good to me." "If you love me, Tess, what is the rest? What matter?" "It is not love, it is something else." "Not love?" "No. I have never loved you, I think. I have liked you-oh, I have liked you so much! But I have never loved you. And now I hate myself for my folly!" She shook her head from side to side in bitter grief. "But, Tess, have you really never loved me at all?" "I have not," she sobbed. "I thought I did-but I see now I did not. I have been very wicked, and I deserve to suffer for it." He was silent for a moment. Then he said: "I did not expect this. I thought you loved me. Why did you let me think so? Why did you encourage me?" "I don't know. I wanted to be good to you-to make up for the past. I have suffered so much." "Suffered? What have you suffered?" She did not answer. After a pause she murmured: "You have a right to know. I will tell you. But not now-not here." "Tell me where, then?" "I will write it. I cannot tell it now." "Very well. Write it." They walked on. The moon had now risen clear of the trees, and shone upon them. Clare saw her face, pale and distressed. His own heart was heavy. He felt that a crisis had come. "Tess," he said, "do you mean that you will never be my wife?" "I cannot. I am not good enough." "Not good enough? You are an angel!" "I am not. I am a poor sinful woman. You do not know-you will know when I write." "Sinful? What sin can you have committed? You are pure in my eyes." "Do not say that. Wait till you know." "Well, I will wait. But you must write soon. I cannot bear this uncertainty." "I will write to-morrow." "Where shall I address you?" "At Marlott. But I shall not be there long. I am going away." "Going away? Where?" "I do not know yet. I will tell you in my letter." "Must you go? Cannot you stay near me?" "It is better that I should go. It is better for you. You must forget me." "Forget you? Never!" "You must try. You must marry some good pure woman who will make you happy." "Tess, you are breaking my heart!" "It is better to break it now than later. Good-bye!" She pulled away from him. "You are not going now-to-night?" "Yes. It is best." "But where will you go?" "To my mother's for a little while. Good-bye, Angel!" "Call me Angel still! You are my wife in the sight of Heaven!" "No-no! Don't call me that. I am not worthy." She turned and walked quickly away. He stood watching her till her figure disappeared in the moonlight. Then he went on his way, stunned and sorrowful.
