So I lived my life alone, without anyone I could really talk to, until six years ago when my plane had an accident in the Sahara Desert. Something broke in my engine. Since I had no mechanic or passengers with me, I had to try to fix it all by myself. It was a matter of life or death: I only had enough drinking water to last a week.

🔊
mechanic /məˈkænɪk/
n. a person whose job is repairing machines, especially the engines of vehicles
🔊
scarcely /ˈskersli/
adv. only just; almost not

So on the first night, I slept on the sand, a thousand miles from any place where people live. I felt more alone than a sailor lost at sea on a raft. So you can imagine how surprised I was when, at sunrise, a strange little voice woke me up. It said:

🔊
habitation /ˌhæbɪˈteɪʃn/
n. the act of living in a place; a house or place to live in
🔊
shipwrecked /ˈʃɪprekt/

🔊
amazement /əˈmeɪzmənt/
n. a feeling of great surprise or wonder
🔊 "If you pleasedraw me a sheep!"

"Please—draw me a sheep!"

I jumped up, completely shocked. I rubbed my eyes hard. I looked all around me carefully. And I saw a very unusual little person, standing there and looking at me very seriously. Here you can see the best picture I later managed to draw of him. But my drawing is much less charming than he was.

🔊
thunderstruck /ˈθʌndərstrʌk/
adj. extremely surprised or shocked
🔊
extraordinary /ɪkˈstrɔːrdəneri/
adj. very unusual, special, unexpected, or strange
🔊
portrait /ˈpɔːrtrət/
n. a painting, drawing, or photograph of a person, especially of the head and shoulders
🔊
charming /ˈtʃɑːrmɪŋ/
adj. very pleasant or attractive

But that's not my fault. When I was six years old, the grown-ups discouraged me from becoming a painter, so I never learned to draw anything except boas from the outside and boas from the inside.

🔊
discouraged /dɪsˈkɜːrɪdʒd/
v. past tense of 'discourage': to try to prevent something or to prevent somebody from doing something, especially by making it difficult to do or by showing that you do not approve of it
🔊
boas /ˈbəʊəz/
n. plural of 'boa': a large snake that kills animals for food by wrapping itself around them and crushing them

Now I stared at this sudden appearance with my eyes wide open in surprise. Remember, I had crashed in the desert a thousand miles from any place where people live. Yet this little man didn't seem lost in the sand, or tired, hungry, thirsty, or scared. He didn't look like a child lost in the middle of the desert, far from any people. When I finally could speak, I said to him:

🔊
apparition /ˌæpəˈrɪʃn/
n. a ghost or a ghost-like image of a person
🔊
crashed /kræʃt/
v. past tense of 'crash': (of a vehicle) to hit something, especially another vehicle, violently and noisily
🔊
inhabited /ɪnˈhæbɪtɪd/
adj. (of a place) having people living there
🔊
straying /ˈstreɪɪŋ/
v. present participle of 'stray': to move away from the place where you should be, without intending to
🔊
fatigue /fəˈtiːɡ/
n. a feeling of being extremely tired, usually because of hard work or exercise
🔊 "Butwhat are you doing here?"

"But—what are you doing here?"

And in reply, he repeated very slowly, as if it were very important:

🔊
consequence /ˈkɑːnsəkwens/
n. a result of something that has happened; importance
🔊 "If you pleasedraw me a sheep ..."

"Please—draw me a sheep..."

When something is too mysterious, you don't dare disobey. Even though it seemed silly to me, there I was, a thousand miles from any people and in danger of dying, so I took a piece of paper and my pen from my pocket. But then I remembered that I had studied geography, history, math, and grammar, and I told the little fellow (a bit annoyed too) that I didn't know how to draw.

🔊
overpowering /ˌoʊvərˈpaʊərɪŋ/
adj. so strong that it cannot be controlled or resisted
🔊
disobey /ˌdɪsəˈbeɪ/
v. to refuse to do what a person, law, order, etc. tells you to do
🔊
Absurd /əbˈsɜːrd/
adj. completely ridiculous; not logical and sensible
🔊
fountain-pen /ˈfaʊntən pen/
n. a pen with a container from which ink flows continuously to the nib
🔊
arithmetic /əˈrɪθmətɪk/
n. the branch of mathematics that deals with the adding, multiplying, etc. of numbers
🔊
chap /tʃæp/
n. (informal, old-fashioned) a man or boy
🔊
crossly /ˈkrɔːsli/
adv. in an annoyed or angry way

"That doesn't matter. Draw me a sheep..."

But I had never drawn a sheep. So I drew for him one of the two pictures I had drawn so many times. It was the boa constrictor from the outside.

🔊
boa constrictor /ˈbəʊə kənˌstrɪktə(r)/
n. a large snake that kills its prey by coiling around it and squeezing it

"No, no, no! I don't want an elephant inside a boa constrictor. A boa constrictor is very dangerous, and an elephant is too big. Where I live, everything is very small. What I need is a sheep. Draw me a sheep."

🔊
cumbersome /ˈkʌmbərsəm/
adj. large or heavy and therefore difficult to carry or use; slow and complicated

So then I drew a picture.

He looked at it carefully, then said:

🔊 "No. This sheep is already very sickly. Make me another."

"No. This sheep is already very sick. Draw me another one."

🔊
sickly /ˈsɪkli/
adj. often ill; weak and unhealthy; causing a slightly unpleasant feeling

So I drew another picture.

🔊 My friend smiled gently and indulgently.

My friend smiled kindly and patiently.

🔊
indulgently /ɪnˈdʌldʒəntli/
adv. in a way that allows someone to have or do what they want, especially when this is not good for them

"You see for yourself," he said, "this is not a sheep. This is a ram. It has horns."

🔊
ram /ræm/
n. an adult male sheep

So then I drew again.

🔊 But it was rejected too, just like the others.

But he didn't like that one either, just like the others.

🔊
rejected /rɪˈdʒektɪd/
v. past tense of 'reject': to refuse to accept or consider something

"This one is too old. I want a sheep that will live a long time."

By now, I had run out of patience, because I was in a hurry to start taking apart my engine. So I quickly drew this picture.

🔊
exhausted /ɪɡˈzɔːstɪd/
adj. extremely tired and without enough energy to do anything else; completely used
🔊
tossed /tɔːst/
v. past tense of 'toss': to throw something lightly or carelessly

And I explained it to him.

"This is just his box. The sheep you asked for is inside."

I was very surprised to see my young judge's face light up:

🔊
judge /dʒʌdʒ/
n. a person who decides the results of a competition; a public official with authority to decide cases in a court of law

"That's exactly what I wanted! Do you think this sheep will need a lot of grass?"

"Because where I live everything is very small..."

"There will surely be enough grass for him," I said. "It's a very small sheep that I've given you."

He bent his head over the drawing.

"Not so small that—Look! He has fallen asleep..."
