Oh, little prince! Slowly I began to understand the mysteries of your unhappy life... For a long time, your only fun was the simple joy of watching the sunset. I learned this new thing on the fourth morning, when you said to me: "I really like sunsets. Come, let's go see a sunset now." "But we have to wait," I said. "Wait? For what?" "For the sunset. We must wait until it's time." At first, you looked very surprised. Then you laughed quietly. You told me: "I always forget I'm not at home!" That's right. Everyone knows that when it is noon in the United States, the sun is setting in France. If you could fly to France in one minute, you could go straight to see the sunset, right from noon. Sadly, France is too far for that. But on your small planet, my little prince, all you need to do is move your chair a few steps. You can watch the day end and evening come whenever you want... "One day," you said to me, "I saw the sunset forty-four times!" And a bit later you added: "You know—you love the sunset when you are very sad..." "Were you that sad, then?" I asked, "on the day of the forty-four sunsets?" But the little prince did not reply.
